OAK FOREST, IL - The Chicago Cougars Elite squad came into this past weekend with a chip on their shoulder and a mission to prove they’re not just contenders in the USPHL—they’re the team to beat. Three games in three days, two against their cross-town rivals, the Chicago Crush, and one against divisional foes, the Decatur Blaze. By the time the final horn sounded on Sunday night, the Cougars had not only flexed their offensive muscle but also showcased their resilience, discipline, and depth. Let’s break it down, shift by shift.

The weekend kicked off with a statement game against the Crush, and boy, did the Cougars deliver. After a shaky first period that saw the Crush take a 2-1 lead, the Cougars flipped the script in the second frame with a five-goal explosion that left the Crush reeling.

Jeffrey Schroeder was the maestro of this symphony, racking up 2 goals and 5 assists for a jaw-dropping 7-point night. Caleb Lind and Gianni Annicchiarico also lit the lamp, while Jakub Potoczny dished out helpers like he was handing out candy on Halloween. The Cougars’ power play was clinical, going 1-for-2, and their penalty kill held strong despite 16 minutes in the box.

Nate Maurin stood tall between the pipes, turning aside 25 of 28 shots, including some key saves early when the game was still tight. By the third period, it was a full-blown rout, with the Cougars adding two more goals to seal the deal. This wasn’t just a win—it was a declaration.

Fresh off their dismantling of the Crush, the Cougars rolled into Saturday’s matchup against the Decatur Blaze with confidence oozing from every pore. And it showed.

Caleb Lind continued his torrid pace, netting two goals to bring his season total to 19. The Cougars dominated from the opening faceoff, outshooting the Blaze 55-23 in a game that felt like target practice at times. Kole Wendt was solid in net, stopping 21 shots, but let’s be honest—this game was won in the offensive zone.

The highlight of the night? A shorthanded goal by Caleb Schulz in the second period that not only broke the Blaze’s spirit but also stood as the game-winner. The Cougars’ special teams were once again a difference-maker, going 2-for-3 on the power play and killing off all five of Decatur’s man-advantage opportunities.

By the time Cameron Twadell buried the sixth goal early in the third, the Blaze were left searching for answers. The Cougars, meanwhile, were already looking ahead to Sunday’s rematch with the Crush.

Sunday Night Slugfest: Cougars 5, Crush 4

If Friday’s game was a statement, Sunday’s was a full-blown exclamation point. In a tightly contested battle that saw both teams trade blows, the Cougars once again proved they have the clutch gene.

Anthony Boston opened the scoring with his first of the season, but the Crush responded with two quick goals to keep things interesting. Enter Jeffrey Schroeder, who notched two goals of his own, including a beauty just 37 seconds into the third period. Gianni Annicchiarico was the hero of the night, though, potting two power-play goals, including the game-winner midway through the final frame.

The game wasn’t without its drama. Schroeder was handed a game misconduct for spearing late in the third, and the Crush capitalized on the ensuing power play to pull within one. But Andrew DiSilvestro, making his first start of the weekend, stood tall in net, making 33 saves to preserve the win.

The Cougars’ penalty kill was tested heavily, with the Crush going 2-for-7 on the power play, but when it mattered most, the Cougars buckled down and got the job done. This was a gritty, hard-fought win that showcased the Cougars’ ability to win in different ways.

Key Takeaways from the Weekend

  1. Jeffrey Schroeder is a Problem (for other teams): With 4 goals and 7 assists over the three games, Schroeder is playing at a level that’s borderline unfair. His vision, playmaking, and ability to rise to the occasion make him the engine that drives this Cougars team.

  2. Special Teams Domination: The Cougars’ power play went 5-for-8 on the weekend, while their penalty kill was a perfect 12-for-12. In a league where special teams often decide games, the Cougars are thriving.

  3. Depth Shines Bright: From Caleb Lind’s scoring touch to Gianni Annicchiarico’s clutch performances, the Cougars are getting contributions up and down the lineup. Even Anthony Boston got in on the action with his first goal of the season.

  4. Resilience Under Fire: Whether it was bouncing back from an early deficit on Friday or holding off a late surge from the Crush on Sunday, the Cougars showed they can handle adversity and come out on top.

Looking Ahead

At 15-10-0-1, the Cougars are heating up at the right time. With Schroeder, Lind, and Potoczny leading the charge, and the defense and goaltending holding firm, this team has all the pieces to make a deep playoff run.

Next up, the Cougars face another tough 3-game test against the Fort Wayne Spacemen, with Friday's game scheduled to be played outdoors at Parkway Bank Park in Rosemont, Illinois. If this weekend was any indication, they’re more than ready for the challenge. Buckle up, folks—this team is just getting started.

Final Grade for the Weekend: A+
