MOUNT CLEMENS, MI - The Chicago Cougars Premier squad made a formidable impression at the 2024 USPHL Detroit Showcase, showcasing their skill with a 3-1 record over four intense days of hockey action at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena. The Cougars demonstrated both offensive firepower and defensive resilience, solidifying their position as a team to watch this season.


Game-by-Game Breakdown

Game 1: Chicago Cougars vs. Fresh Coast Freeze (5-2 Win)

The Cougars opened the showcase with a commanding 5-2 victory against the Fresh Coast Freeze. After trailing 2-0 midway through the second period, Chicago mounted a fierce comeback. Brett Tumbrink spearheaded the effort, scoring twice and adding an assist. His power-play goal late in the second period sparked a four-goal third period for the Cougars. Goalie Sam Burcal was pivotal, making 15 saves to secure the win.


Game 2: Chicago Cougars vs. Battle Creek Kernels (3-0 Win)

In their second matchup, the Cougars delivered a defensive masterclass, shutting out the Battle Creek Kernels 3-0. Cameron Boville was impeccable in goal, stopping all 22 shots he faced. The game remained scoreless until late in the third period when Trey Henderson found the back of the net, igniting a late-game surge that saw Rocco Romita and Griffin Delfosse also score in quick succession.


Game 3: Chicago Cougars vs. Cincinnati Cyclones (4-3 OT Win)


The third game was a nail-biter, with Chicago edging out the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-3 in overtime. The Cougars raced to a 3-0 lead by the early second period, thanks to goals from Alexander Musyakevych, Marko Cejka, and Griffin Delfosse. However, Cincinnati stormed back in the third period to tie the game. In overtime, Damien Calzada emerged as the hero, netting the game-winning goal just over a minute into extra time.


Game 4: Chicago Cougars vs. Columbus Mavericks (1-4 Loss)


In their final showcase appearance, the Cougars faced off against a tough Columbus Mavericks squad and fell 4-1. Despite Alexander Musyakevych scoring his team-leading 13th goal of the season to briefly equalize in the second period, Columbus pulled away with two quick goals in the third period to seal Chicago's only loss of the showcase.

Alexander Musyakevych continued to be an offensive juggernaut for the Cougars, tallying three goals and two assists over four games. His consistent scoring touch has been crucial for Chicago's success this season.Brett Tumbrink was another standout performer, contributing significantly with two goals and multiple assists throughout the showcase. His leadership on ice was evident as he played pivotal roles in key moments.


Goaltending Duo: Sam Burcal and Cameron Boville were exceptional between the pipes. Burcal secured two wins with solid performances against Fresh Coast Freeze and Cincinnati Cyclones, while Boville's shutout against Battle Creek Kernels highlighted his reliability as a last line of defense.
